I played with a Palm Pre today at Best Buy. I’ve been somewhat coveting that sucker since Palm announced it several months back and, though it was recently released, had not managed to find anyone who actually ponied up the money for this sucker. Here’s the thing- it’s not that great. The first thing I noticed about the Pre in comparison to the iPhone 3GS I’ve used for the last week is that its dog slow. I don’t want to see a spinning wheel while opening apps. Also, the keyboard is just terrible. Having been a (apparently not-so-loyal) BlackBerry user, i know what a good mobile keyboard feels like. The Pre’s keyboard is not comfortable. It feels plasticy and cheap. Final complaint: The Pre is damn ugly. Its girth is not justified by a larger screen.

Overall, the Pre left me rather bummed for the future of the once great Palm. Maybe the new WebOS will take off, but the world has enough mobile OSes as it is.
